Councilor Amy Slay, Ward 4, announced earilier this month that she is resigning her position on city council due to a move outside of city limits, making her no longer eligible to hold her seat.
On Monday, Feb. 12, the Cottage Grove City Council discussed filling the vacancy, effective Feb. 28 when Slay steps down.
Under the city charter, the council is responsible for filling the seat but a specific process is not outlined.
"You could choose someone tonight if you wanted to," city manager Richard Meyers said.
The council, however, opted to make applications available through March 5. On March 12, candidates will undergo public interviews during the city council meeting and the council will choose a replacement for Slay's seat.
Councilors said they would reserve their comments for Slay's departure for her last meeting later this month but noted they would miss her presence on the council. When asked if she had anything to add, Slay stated, "You could consider having outside city limit representation and I could stay in this seat..."
To be on council, residents must live in the ward at least a year and be a qualified elector.
