The early part of the season could not be going better for the Creswell’s boys basketball team.
The Bulldogs faced some adversity against Elmira on Thursday, Dec.9 with players getting into foul trouble, but still picked up a double-digit win 54-42 over the Falcons.
The next day, the boys left no doubt on the road against Scio earning a big 67-27 win and having the program’s first undefeated start since 2013.
“I think that the guys are playing with a lot of confidence, which is good,” said Head Coach Jesse Thomas. “I mean, they’re still just still gaining experience, but I think they’re starting to realize that we have to play to be successful, especially on the defensive end.”
Caleb Lee led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Connor Hanson and Jack Nguyen each had 10. The team totaled 19 steals and shot a red-hot 50 percent from the 3-point line in their dominating win over Scio.
Creswell started a little slow and traded buckets back and forth with Scio in the first quarter. Caleb Lee knocked down a three-pointer before the first quarter came to an end making the score 18-13.
In the opening moments of the second quarter, Lee hit another three and would soon be followed by two more three-pointers from Connor Hanson.
The Bulldogs’ pressure defensively would be cranked up to another level after stringing together stops and getting steals while holding Scio to zero points in the second quarter and going on a 20-0 scoring run. Creswell then took a big 38-13 lead into halftime.
“I thought in the first quarter we looked a little flat-footed like maybe a little gassed from the night before, we weren’t rotating properly,” said Thomas. “The one thing about our group is that when we start stringing together stops, it’s kind of like a frenzy and when we got a couple of baskets to fall
it just kind of snowballed.”
Nguyen and Lee kept the offense rolling in the third quarter as Creswell’s lead grew to 37 at 50-13. With just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Scio finally scored a three to end their long-scoring drought of nearly two whole quarters.
The Bulldogs were able to coast in the fourth quarter as they capped off a night where they were in control most of the way winning 67-27.
“I think we’re playing good as a team so far,” said Senior Creswell guard Caleb Lee. “There’s little things that we can work on, like our communication and keeping our heads up when things aren’t going our way. But moving forward we just need to stay together as a team and do what we gotta to do keep winning.”
The Bulldog boys will look to continue adding to their win streak as they host the Bulldog Invitational tournament next Friday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
Caleb Lee 16 points, 3 rebounds
Jack Nguyen 10 points, 5 rebounds
Connor Hanson 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
