Cottage Grove chess takes sixth

The Cottage Grove High School varsity chess team finished its season last weekend at the Oregon High School Chess Team Championship tournament held at Willamette High School in Eugene. The 14 schools playing there represented the top high school chess teams in the state. Participants included at least four masters and experts (players ranked above 2000 points on the official chess ratings scale).

Coached by Steve Kilston and Taylor Wilhour, the Lions’ squad entered the tournament with the lowest ratings average among the 14 teams, but with some excellent play managed to capture 6th place overall by winning two matches (against Marist and Junction City) and tying one (against Coquille), out of the team’s total of five matches.

At first board was Alex Reimann, second board was shared by Spencer Falk and Zeak Bray, third board was shared by Zeak and Aliano Underwood, fourth board was shared by Aliano and Maren Bartlog and fifth board was shared by Taylor Henry and Enzo Valdez. Maren Bartlog is to be congratulated for winning four of her five games at the tournament.
