Cottage Grove track coach resigns

Head coach Ricky Knutson steps down after 20 years of coaching

Cottage Grove High School head track and field coach Ricky Knutson has resigned from his position with the team. The announcement, that was made via a press release from the South Lane School District on Thursday, comes just weeks after the boys track and field team finished in sixth-place at the state meet.

“Ricky has done an outstanding job of building our track program and working with our kids. He has built a strong staff, and a culture of competition and striving for excellence among our athletes. Season after season, the improvements during the season and peak performance at district and state meets is amazing,” said CGHS Athletic Director Gary Roberts in the press release.

Knutson has been coaching track in various capacities for the past 20 years and stepped into the role of head coach at CGHS in 2012. In that time, the Lions have won four consecutive Sky-Em co-ed district championships to go with a pair of girls’ titles and three straight boys’ titles.

“Ricky will be a huge loss to our athletic department. His ability to motivate kids to maximize their talents through competition and his stress on work ethic and preparation are unbelievably effective,” said Roberts. “He is an extremely talented coach that is respected all across the state, specifically his knowledge and coaching of distance runners.”

The Cottage Grove distance runners were led this season by Jimmy Talley who finished second in the 3,000 at the OSAA State Championships.
