The Creswell Bulldogs track team returned to action on April 2 at the Frank Good Preamble following a break and saw both the boys and girls team finish fifth with 64 and 58.5 points respectively. The Bulldogs came away with four event wins with normal standouts Jack Nguyen and Harmony Goodwin leading the way.
“It was a lot of fun to go back to Sutherlin,” said Head Coach Jonathan Ferguson. “We’ve been there a lot and they always put on a good meet. Early on this season we were not trying to score high as a team at a lot of these meetings just because we’re picking and choosing different events for our athletes to see where they can fit best. But we have had a lot of kids do some different events and have some good results so that is always good to see.”
Still being so early in the season and with so many newcomers for the Creswell track team Coach Ferguson has been very encouraged with their early signs of development. By seeing freshman Luis Hernandez win the 400m race and also having underclassmen fill out the majority of the 4x400m relay team on both sides.
“Honestly, we’re a really young team,” said Ferguson. “But we do have some dedicated upperclassmen who have really excelled this year and those upperclassmen set the standard for the rest of those kids. A lot of the younger kids look up to them and they’re really good mentors, really good leaders on the team. And a lot of the underclassmen are showing some promise, we had a lot of young good girls, some young guys, too, who are already exceeding expectations.”
The junior trio of Kaitlyn Machado, Samairah Quinones and Natasha Battan lead the way for the Bulldogs on the girls side for the throwing events. Quinones and Machado finished second and third in the shot put, Quinones also finished seventh in the javelin and Battan and Machado both finished in the top 10 in the girls discus. Despite still moving athletes around early on this season, the Bulldogs 4x400m relay showed some good results with the girls finishing first overall with a time of 4:52.56 and the boys taking second with a time of 3:55.81.
“Everyone on this team wants to listen and get better,” said Junior Hurdler Jack Nguyen. “It sets an image for the whole team and early on this season I’ve really liked how everyone on the team has listened to the coach and the leaders.”
Creswell will have finished out another meet at Sutherlin with the results to be determined after The Sentinel’s press time and now will get prepared for a back-to-back meet schedule on April 21 with a meet at Harrisburg. Followed the next day by the John Oliver Invitational hosted by Central high school.
