The Bulldogs saw their first game in two weeks after a COVID-19 breakout at Coquille High School forced the Red Devils to cancel all athletic activities.
Creswell hosted the winless Central Linn Cobras this past Friday to see a second Bulldog victory this season.
The Cobras in their first two games had given up an average of over 33 points per game while Creswell scored 40 in their first game against Harrisburg.
Creswell’s quarterback Connor Hanson and receiver Jack Nguyen got the offense going for the Bulldogs as Hanson connected with Nguyen for 24 yards and Nguyen finished the drive with a 10-yard run to the outside for the score. Giving Creswell an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Central Linn had their turn to show off their triple-option scheme when they possessed the ball.
The Cobras were able to rush for some first-downs to open their series but were quickly faced with a 3rd and 13 forcing them to pass.
The Bulldogs managed to get past the offensive line en route to sacking the Cobra quarterback for Central Linn to punt. Two penalties against the Creswell offense backed them up, deep into their own territory as the first quarter was coming to a close. The Bulldogs ran a quarterback keeper for Connor Hanson. Hanson was able to break away from Cobra defenders on his way to an 84-yard touchdown run pushing the lead to 13-0 for Creswell to end the first quarter.
Central Linn got the ball to start the second quarter and was not able to move the ball much on offense being forced to punt again. The Cobras punter did not get very much distance on the kick as the ball only traveled 10 yards giving the Creswell offense a very favorable field position.
Jack Nguyen was able to get to the outside of the Cobra’s defense, moving the ball 20 yards down to the Central Linn nine-yard line setting up first and goal for Creswell.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the ball back 15 yards to the 23-yard line but that would not stop the Bulldogs offense as Connor Hanson got those lost yards back the very next play. Central Linn stopped the Bulldogs short of the score at the two-yard line setting up a 4th and goal situation for Creswell.
Hanson was able to run in for another Creswell score and after converting a two-point attempt the lead grew to 21-0 for the Bulldogs.
Central Linn was able to make a breakthrough on offense with their next possession as running back Johnathan Shannon broke away for a 65-yard scoring run on 3rd down making the Creswell lead 21-6. Creswell kept their offense rolling before halftime as they moved the ball down the field capped off by a Conner Hanson 23-yard touchdown pass to Jack Nguyen making the lead 27-6 Creswell at the half.
Creswell tried to sneak an onside kick to start the third quarter but Central Linn was all over it, returning the ball to the Creswell 20 yard line and having a golden opportunity to score. The Cobra offense wasn’t able to maximize their opportunity and was stopped by Creswell’s defense on 4th down.
Hanson and Nguyen continued to make plays for the Creswell offense as Nguyen ripped off a 20-yard run moving the ball down to the Central Linn 20-yard line.
Hanson completed a pass to Nguyen again for a 10-yard gain setting up 1st and goal for Creswell. After a snap went over the head Connor Hanson moved the ball back nine yards setting up a 3rd and goal for the Bulldogs.
Two offside penalties moved the ball back up to the Cobra nine-yard line for Creswell and Hanson ran the ball down the Central Linn one-yard line setting up another 4th and goal situation for Creswell. Hanson ran the ball again right up the middle for another Creswell score making the score 34-6 Bulldogs.
The Cobras got some help on offense after two penalties came against the Creswell defense to start the fourth quarter, setting up Central Linn with another good opportunity to score. Johnathan Shannon was able to run in a score from eight yards making the score 34-12 Creswell.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession giving the Cobras another chance to score. Central Linn converted a 4th down with an 18-yard run setting up a 1st and goal. Creswell’s defense stuffed the Central Linn offense on 4th and goal, getting the ball back with little time left in the game. Creswell ran out the clock on their last possession and earned the victory against Central Linn 34-12.
Connor Hanson finished his night with 410 total yards and six touchdowns, while Cayden Cox added seven and a half tackles on the defense.
Creswell amassed 487 yards of total offense and will look to stay hot even though their next scheduled game against Lowell was cancelled, but the school has been in contact with other teams to still host a game next Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
