Florence Lauretta Pirie Spady, 97, of Cottage Grove, Oregon, passed away at Middlefield Oaks Senior Living in Cottage Grove, on Saturday, July 15, 2023 of causes incident to age.
Florence was born in Bend, Oregon on January 24, 1926 to Adrian Anthony Pirie and Edna Agnes Stott Pirie. She was the youngest of four children. The family moved several times then settled in Eugene. Florence graduated from Springfield High School in 1943. She married Fred John Spady on December 19, 1944 in Springfield, while he was home on three weeks leave from the Navy during WWII.
After the war ended, they set up housekeeping in a rented home at 1735 West Broadway in Eugene. Fred built their second home on Goodpasture Island Road. They moved to Cottage Grove in 1949 when Fred and his brother Jack went into partnership owning and operating Cottage Grove Garbage Service. That’s when he built their home on Harvey Road. They lived there until 1965. When they sold that place, they moved up on Abbott Lane north of town on old Highway 99. They lived there until Fred died in 1991. Florence sold it and bought her house on 17th Street in town. She lived there over 32 years until last March, when her health began to fail, and she moved into Middlefield Oaks.
Florence liked to paint and keep everything fresh and clean looking. She loved to read, she was an excellent seamstress, learned how to do calligraphy and how to decorate wedding cakes. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She served faithfully in many callings over her lifetime and spent many years serving in the Relief Society. The calling she loved the most was serving as an ordinance worker in the Portland Temple.
Florence is survived by her daughter, Adrienne Joyce (Adee) Hacking and Douglas of Layton, Utah, and her son, Joseph Samuel Spady and Wendy of Cottage Grove. She has eight grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings, William Pirie, Agnes Kanne and Dorothy Pierce as well as all of Fred’s siblings, Francis Schreiber, Jack Spady, Joseph Spady, Edith Redfield, William Spady and Chuck Spady.
