Independence Day celebrations kicked off in Cottage Grove and the surrounding areas July 4. Yoncalla held its annual parade Thursday morning, featuring an array of horseback riders, vintage cars, emergency vehicles and decked out trucks. Children and adults alike scrambled to catch candy flung from parade participants.
At noon, the Church at London performed the inaugural ringing of its bell inside its newly-constructed bell tower. The bell had fallen into disuse for more than a decade before community members rallied to reinstate it. The event included a lesson in history, a sermon and a BBQ.
For its 18th year, the annual 4th of July Golf Cart Parade was held at Middlefield Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care facility as area residents decorated golf carts, paraded through the neighborhood and handed out candy to residents of the community.
After sunset, fireworks exploded over the Yoncalla High School sports field for a crowd of onlookers.
