Graduation social-distancing style

Last Saturday, Jun. 6, Cottage Grove High School seniors officially marked the end of their high school careers with a drive-thru graduation ceremony at the school.

Nearly three months after schools were closed prematurely due to coronavirus concerns, CGHS officials carried out their creative solution for a socially distant celebration.

Students and families began the route by picking up their name placards in the back parking lot staging area before making their way to the front of the gym where they were handed their diplomas in their vehicles by Principal Kevin Herington (right). While students surely missed the experience of taking their final steps as Lions across the podium, families came prepared as the lineup of graduate vehicles included classic cars, limousines, party buses and various decorations.

The Class of 2020 motto — “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” — provided a fitting reminder to graduates whose final year ended in such turmoil and uncertainty.
