High school sports recap 4.11


A look back at the busy week of high school sports in the area

Cottage Grove Track and Field

Last Thursday the Lions boys’ and girls’ teams both were victorious in a home meet. On the boys’ side, the team scored 64 points to beat out Junction City (55) and Pleasant Hill (48). The team saw first place finishes from Konrad Raum (1500), Jimmy Talley (3000), Hayden Glenn (300 hurdles), Hunter Hall (shot put), Juice Claflin (javelin), Erick Giffen (high jump) and the 4x400 relay team of Giffen, Raum, Fernando Soto-Cruz and Cooper Ladd.

The girls team saw first place finishes from Faryn Dahlen (100 and 100 hurdles), Zarah Wemple (200), Raina Herzog (shot put), Sydney Boxberger (javelin), Avery Hutchins (high jump), the 4x100 relay team of Wemple, Matty Ladd, Mariah Ludkier and Angeilca Manuntag and the 4x400 team of Wemple, Boxberger, Sabrina James and Mariah Ludkier. The girls finished with 70 points while Junction City had 50 and Pleasant Hill 44.

On Saturday, the top athletes of each team competed at the Jim Robinson Twilight Invitational in Roseburg against teams from all classifications. On the boys side, Konrad Raum and Paesen Timm finished 6th and 11th respectively in the 3000, the pair are now have the first and third best times in the 4A classification. Jacob Woods took second in the 100 with a time of 11.30.

For the girls, their 4x100 team of Faryn Dahlen, Matty Ladd, Tara Child and Zarah Wemple took second at the meet. Their time of 51.86 is now the second fastest in the 4A classification. Dahlen placed third in the 100m hurdles.

Cottage Grove Softball

Last Tuesday, the Lions began league play with a 20-0 loss to Junction City on the road. The team’s double-header against Elmira was re-scheduled to this week.

North Douglas Baseball

In their first league game of the season last Tuesday, the Warriors defeated Lowell 24-0.

North Douglas Softball

The Warriors began league play with a 16-4 home victory against Lowell.

Elkton Track and Field

The Elks competed at the Oakland home meet last Thursday. For the boys, Trysten Woody won the high jump. On the girls side, freshman Margaret Byle won the 100 and 200 while Sadie Olson took first place in discus.

Elkton/Yoncalla Baseball

In the opening week of league play, the Elks fell to Oakland in all three meetings (3-22, 5-23, 0-10).

Yoncalla/Elkton Softball

The Eagles fell to Oakland in their first three meetings of the season (23-2, 29-4, 20-0).

Yoncalla/North Douglas Track and Field

Competing at the Glide Invitational on Saturday, the boys and girls 4x100 relay teams both took first place.
