Following a huge upset win against Marist on Tuesday, Feb.15 the Lady Lions basketball team had to prepare for the final home game of the season against Siuslaw on Feb. 18.

As with occasion on senior night, emotions tend to run high with players participating in their final home game. On this night, the five Lady Lions seniors would have no letdown and were able to cruise to a comfortable victory over Siuslaw 54-11 putting an ideal bow on the end of their league season.

“I think this week we played some good basketball,” said Head Coach Erin Royse. “Tuesday’s game, we played some good basketball, and then we carried it into Friday. And that’s probably the best basketball we’ve played all season.”

Cottage Grove got their offensive groove going quickly starting the contest out on a 19-0 run while also playing suffocating defense.

Siuslaw didn’t score a point until 5:32 left to go in the second quarter at which point the game was already firmly toward the Lady Lions.

Jaylee Lima, Emma Hitt and Arnold all combined to knock down three-pointers extending the Cottage Grove lead at halftime to over 30.

The rout continued in the second half as Siuslaw was only able to muster seven more points in the following two quarters.

But the Cottage Grove seniors all got to enjoy their final moments on the playing floor and were sent off with a big applause and cheers from the home crowd. The Lady Lions were able to put the finishing touches on the game and closed the book on the season with a 54-11 win over the visiting Vikings.

“I have a lot of gratitude for being able to be a part of it,” said Royse. “I coached them when they were in middle school, I enjoyed being an assistant and then getting the opportunity to be the head coach. I’ve enjoyed this opportunity to be the head coach and these players are amazing. The program is losing five amazing people and it was just amazing watching them grow from sixth-graders into young women.”
