On Thursday, June 3, Cottage Grove’s girls’ basketball team took on Siuslaw High School at home. The Lady Lions played great defense and managed the offense while still pushing the ball, taking the win over the Viks 55-20.

Leading in scoring was senior Matty Ladd with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Also putting up many points for Cottage Grove was junior Halle De Garlais, who had 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Coach Erin Royse said, “Matty and Halle not only gave us some baskets, but also played solid defense.”

In addition to Ladd and De Garlais, junior Gracie Arnold had 10 points and racked up 4 rebounds, assists and blocks for the Lady Lions, dominating the boards.

“Gracie Arnold played such a complete game,” said Royse. “Not only can she score, but she makes you pay one way or the other.”

Cottage Grove’s point guard, senior Mikaela Blomquist,” ended up with 5 defensive boards leading to 4 assists in transition.

Said Royse, “Mikaela Blomquist really set the tone tonight, pushing in transition and getting to the hoop with calculated drives.”

In general, the Lady Lions were on point the whole evening, but really picked up their momentum in the second half.

“We kept our focus on a couple different aspects of the game and everyone stepped up to achieve that growth,” said Royse. “I am proud of how our team came out focused in the second half while also taking care of the ball; we cut our turnovers to a quarter of what we had in the first half.”

The Lady Lions play at home tonight, June 10, against Junction City at 5:45 p.m. Their final home game will be Tuesday, June 15 against Marist Catholic at 5:45 p.m.
