Lions baseball shuts out Sheridan

April 7 - The first few games had seen some positive signs for the Cottage Grove baseball team but the Lions couldn’t turn those into wins. However against visiting Sheridan on March 29, the Lions positive signs and continued efforts culminated in a dominant 10-0 win over the Spartans.
Sophomore Micah Spear had a steeler performance as the starting pitcher for the Lions. Spear went five innings, allowed one hit and totaled 11 strikeouts. Teammate Wyatt Teague pitched one inning of relief and only needed nine pitches to three Spartans out. Offensively, Cottage Grove combined for 11 hits with four players having multi-hit games. Christian Spear led the way with three hits, scoring two runs and totaling two RBI.
The Lions pounced on the Spartans early, driving two triples to opposite sides of the outfield in the first inning. Christian and Micah Spear along with Isaiah Cushman all came across home plate for the Lions who grabbed an early 3-0 lead by the end of the first inning.
Through the first four innings, Spear mowed down Sheridan batters racking up eight strikeouts. The Lions blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive doubles that scored three runs. Cottage Grove added to their total in the inning with a Sheridan error that brought Isaiah Cushman and Micah Spear across home plate to score again.
By the end of the inning, the Lions were firmly in front of the Spartans 8-0. In the very next inning, Christian Spear brought across his third RBI with a hard ground ball hit to center field allowing Destin Logan to score. In his one inning of work on the mound, Teague went 1-2-3 in the Sheridan batting order forcing all three to ground out.
The Lions put the finishing touches on the game by adding another run in the bottom of the sixth inning with Micah Spear scoring on a steal. Spear’s last score was the icing on the cake for a dominant afternoon for Cottage Grove as they won 10-0 over Sheridan.
The Lions will return to Kelly Field on Friday, April 7 when they host Cascade with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
