For the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Cottage Grove boys basketball team will be returning to the postseason. The Lions came out strong in the first quarter and led wire to wire, eventually earning the 50-37 victory over the Vikings.

“I thought we executed our game plan pretty well,” said Head Coach Seth Hutchison. “But it’s always nice to win the last one on your home court. And I’m proud of these seniors for the effort and the hard work they’ve put in for the past four years. I’m just extremely excited for them to be able to partake in the postseason, I think it’s really special.”

Brennen Murphy led Cottage Grove with 23 points followed by teammate Carter Bascue with 20 as the Lions also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Vikings 32-24.

Murphy scored the first five Lions points as Cottage Grove pounced on the Vikings from the jump. The lead got to double digits quickly and Siuslaw didn’t score until

3:33 remaining in the first quarter. Murphy’s three-pointer that beat the buzzer to end the opening quarter only charged more energy into an already animated home crowd and the Lions lead grew to 15-3.

“It’s going to be your M.O. go forward being really tough defensively,” said Hutchison. “We have got to be able to take care of the ball, we have to be able to force tough shots and end possessions with a rebound. I thought we did that extremely well not just in the first quarter but the first half.”

Siuslaw’s Brody Terry knocked down the first points of the second quarter but the Lions were quick to respond and the Bascue, Murphy combo was too much for the Vikings to overcome in the first half. Cottage Grove’s defense held Siuslaw to only 10 points at the end of the first half and the Lions were firmly in control at the break 28-10.

After nearly trading point for point in the third quarter, Siuslaw was able to cut into the Lions lead in the early minutes of the final period. The Vikings got the lead down to 11 after a banked three-pointer made by Beau Erickson. From there, Siuslaw would not get closer as Cottage Grove pushed its lead back up to 15 in the following minutes.

With the game in control coach Hutchison gave his four seniors a curtain call, Isaac Stere, Jayden Cameron, Ty Kishen and Carter Bascue were showered with applause and cheers from the crowd as they were substituted out for the final time on their home floor.

The Lions salted away the final minutes of the game and came away with the win 50-37.

“I’m just extremely excited and proud of the hard work that our guys have put in and they deserve this opportunity to play in the postseason,” said Hutchison. “And I’m excited to face some of these teams and be considered one of the better teams in the state for 4A.”

The Lions know one thing for sure is that they will have to travel for their next game, but their postseason opponent will have been decided after The Sentinel’s press time.
