Lions challenged and lost 4-9 on first of two games

Despite outhitting Parkrose Varsity Broncos 8-5, Cottage Grove Varsity Lions lost 9-4 to them on Friday. Jelani Scott's ground out, which resulted in one run being scored, gave Parkrose the lead in the opening inning. 

Then, in the top of the second inning, Destin Logan doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run to tie the score for the Cottage Grove Lions.

On the mound for Cottage Grove was Micah Spear. The right-hander struck out five batters while allowing five runs on two hits over four and a third innings. Wyatt Teague pitched in relief for one and a third innings from the bullpen.

In the game, the Lions had a total of eight hits. Destin Logan, Micah Spear, Hunter Rhodes, Christian Spear, and others all managed multiple base hits, with Logan, M. Spear, and Rhodes leading the Lions in that category with two hits each.

After the first game, coach Rheuban said, "Defensively, we had four costly mistakes that wasted good pitching by Micah Spear and Wyatt Teague. On the mound, our pitchers competed and held Park Rows to only four earned runs. The majority of the time, winning defensive plays will be used.

CG Lions comeback to win second game of double header 13-12

The Cottage Grove Varsity Lions won the Parkrose Varsity Broncos 13-12 on Saturday night after dropping the first game but taking the lead late.

The Lions scored a run in the first inning thanks to Isaiah Cushman's double on a 1-2 count.

The Lion scored two runs in the top of the second, to which ParkRose answered with their own two runs. The Lions scored one run each on singles by Hunter Rose (on the opening pitch of the at-bat) and Isaiah Cushman (on a 3-1 count). Parkrose rallied by scoring one more run on a Johnson single on a 1-2 count.

The Lion's only had one home run on the day. Christian Spear hit a two-run home drive to left field in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, De'Semod Armstrong singled in two runs to tie the game for Park Rose at nine. Parkrose scored three runs in the fifth inning. Kohen Oberman and Armstrong led Parkrose's offensive Firepower with two RBIs each in the inning. 

Right-handed pitcher Hunter Rhodes was chosen to start for the Lions. Rhodes allowed six runs on four hits over three innings while striking out three.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lions had 13 hits. Eubanks, Barnes, M. Spear, Cushman, and C. Spear led the Lions in at-bats with two hits apiece.

The Cottage Grove Lions were down 11-10 in the top of the seventh inning when Anthony Eubanks singled with a 0-1 count, scoring three runs. 

Elijah Cushman, a freshman swing player for the Lions, entered as the game's final pitcher in the seventh inning. After walking the first batter, Cushman recovered to strike out the next three, giving the Lions a 13-12 victory.

"Great response by the club to come back and win game two of the doubleheader in the top of the seventh inning! It's especially unique. Team hitting was excellent. 13 hits were total thanks to our excellent swinging. A two-run home run was hit by Christian Spear. Significant contributions to the victory came from Isaiah Cushman's three RBIs and Logan Houck's two RBIs. I am really proud of the team's perseverance and heart for fighting through all seven innings to get the victory.’ Coach Rheuban remarked.
