Local Sears will continue serving customers

Coco has only worked at Sears Hometown store in Cottage Grove for about two years but it equals out to half of her life. The four-year-old cocker spaniel needs a haircut, according to Rae Cole, part of the three-man, one-dog team at the store. Cole handles the finances and says the Cottage Grove location is doing just fine.

The Sears Holding Company, Sears’ parent company, announced in January that it would be closing nearly 40 Sears locations including the stores located in Portland and Springfield.

“Those were corporate stores,” Cole said. “This is independent.”

The Cottage Grove location is owned by media-shy Phil Ingallinero and supplies a host of home good products from washers to dryers to ovens to lawnmowers. And it will continue to do so.

According to Cole, the closure of the Springfield and Portland stores will not affect the local Sears other than perhaps, a boost in business.

“We’ve been a little busier,” she said. “People who ordered from the other store, their items are coming here for pick-up.”

And while the Cottage Grove store has taken on some of the responsibility of uniting customers with their orders, Cole says the local location is not honoring warranties from other stores.

“We can direct them on where to go,” she said.

Sears in Cottage Grove is located at 118 Gateway Blvd.
