The Cottage Grove football team was looking for a way to bounce back after running into the buzzsaw that was Marist.
The Lions traveled to Newport on Friday in hopes to get their first win on the road this season. However, Newport was searching for their first win of the season and would ultimately claim a 55-34 victory behind their tough rushing attack.
In the middle of the first quarter, Parker Nelson and Curtis Tucker guided the Lions’ offense down the field deep into Newport territory. With the Lions’ offense inside the 10-yard-line, Nelson scrambled right and looked for an open receiver, but his pass would be intercepted in the end-zone killing the drive for the Lions.
The first quarter ended 0-0 but the Cub’s offense was moving the ball down the field and was within eight yards of the endzone to start the second quarter. A minute into the second quarter, Camden Galen took a pitch on the outside for Newport and ran in a score from eight yards out (7-0 Newport).
Nelson and the Lions got the ball back near midfield and were able to move the ball down to the goal line again.
But Nelson would lose the ball and the Cubs would recover the fumble at their own four-yard-line. Two plays later Tyler Mattson connected with his receiver Kaden Bruns for a 64-yard score, growing the Newport lead in the second quarter (14-0 Newport).
On the next Cottage Grove drive Nelson would find his receiver Hayden Peterson for almost a 30-yard gain and a penalty against the Newport defense put the ball at the Newport 9-yard-line.
Nelson ran three times and successfully capped off a score for Cottage Grove (14-7 Newport).
The Cottage Grove defense would force a turnover on the next offensive series for Newport with Myles Julien intercepting the Newport quarterback.
Nelson connected on another deep pass, this time with Brayden Crump for a 28-yard gain down to the Newport 17. Nelson again would have success running the ball against the Cubs defense as he ran in another score tying the game just before halftime (14-14).
With less than 30 seconds left in the half Mattson heaved a pass and found his receiver running down the sideline for a 70-yard score to end the half with a Newport lead (21-14 Newport).
After Newport stopped Cottage Grove to open the second half the Cubs had the ball at their own 33-yard-line. That didn’t phase them much as Carson Braxling took a pitch on the outside and ran up the field for a 67-yard score (27-14 Newport).
On the ensuing kickoff, Nelson returned the kick deep into the Newport territory and Tucker two plays later would rush for a five-yard score (27-21 Newport).
Following a Newport interception, the Cubs had the ball at the Lion’s 42-yard-line and it would take only two runs from Braxling to put up another Newport score (34-20 Newport). Nelson connected with Peterson again on the next drive for a gain of 16. Nelson would run for a gain of 23 down to the Cubs 11-yard-line as the third quarter came to a close.
Cottage Grove scored on the first play of the fourth quarter with a short 3-yard run by Nelson then Nelson would also pass successfully to Chase Cordin for the two-point conversion (34-28 Newport). Newport would waste no time in response as Bruns returned the next kickoff for a Cubs score (41-28 Newport).
Later in the quarter Cottage Grove scored off of a double pass as Nelson threw horizontally left to Crump then Crump threw the ball down field to Peterson for the last Lions score of the evening (41-34 Newport).
The Cubs seized control the rest of the game as they added two more scores from Galen and interception for a score from Braxling ending the Newport night with their first victory of the season.
Cottage Grove will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 29 for senior night and homecoming as they face North Eugene at 7 p.m.
