Police Log 5/10/2022 - 5/16/2022

May 10

• A male individual was found drinking alcohol inside Trailhead Park in violation of city ordinance. The individual was excluded from all city parks for 30 days.

• Harassment was reported at Lincoln Middle School when a juvenile male punched an individual several times causing a slight discoloration to his right cheek.

May 11

• A driver committed the crime of driving under the influence of intoxicants when she drove her vehicle on a highway after consuming alcohol.

• A female complainant reported a male suspect try to get into her vehicle at the 1100 block of Highway 99.

May 12

• A female who had been released from custody earlier in the day occupied the Cottage Grove Police Department lobby, attempting to visit an inmate. During the female’s release, CGPD contacted an agency in California due to an active warrant for a traffic offense. The agency responded hours later saying they would extradite. In the meantime, the female found that her father had been dead at home for days, which was confirmed by department phone records. An officer determined that society’s interest in an out-of-state traffic offense was not sufficient to supersede the need of a daughter to properly bury her father. The female was instructed to return in a week after making arrangements.

• An inmate was found to be in possession of fentanyl while confined in the Cottage Grove Jail.

May 13

• A CGPD officer was advised of a reckless driver in the area of Row River and Gateway Boulevard. The information was relayed from the Oregon State Police (OSP) as multiple other calls had been made about the vehicle. The officer observed the vehicle speeding through the intersection above the posted speed limit of 35mph. The officer followed the vehicle southbound near the I-5 172 exit off-ramp, contacted the driver and passenger and obtained their identification cards. Both the female driver and male passenger were from Roseburg, Oregon. The female was a misdemeanor-level driving status, and the male was a wanted subject out of Marion County Circuit Court for Unauthorized Use Vehicle (UUV). The female was cited and released for her driving status. The male was taking into custody and transported to the Lane County Jail and lodged for the warrant.

• A vehicle owner reported that an unknown person had stolen his car and then wrecked it on I-5 southbound in a river that runs through Middlefield Golf Course. Officers were able to locate the vehicle parked on the shoulder of I-5. The vehicle owner was detained and transported to the Cottage Grove Police Department in order to interview him about the discrepancy in a controlled environment. After being read his Miranda Rights, the individual said that he was willing to talk with the officers. He said that he had consumed fentanyl that day and that he was addicted to drugs.

Over the course of the contact, the individual described having his car stolen, seeing a woman wreck it in a river, seeing a dead body, and being unable to hold still due to how his body felt. He had a gas can because he said his car ran out of gas while he was driving it northbound, which initiated the incident. The individual told officers he would begin detoxing soon. Officers were unable to establish any of the claims, though needles were observed all over inside the vehicle. Officers did not develop probable cause to believe the individual knowingly lied to the police and thus released him. The individual ultimately called a family member to come get him and he was reminded that he was not allowed to drive.

May 14

• Officers contacted a male individual smoking fentanyl inside his vehicle located on the 1300 block of East Main Street at Coiner Park. The individual was later issued a park exclusion order for 30 days from all City of Cottage Grove Parks. He signed the form, understood and was issued a copy of it for full language of the order.
