After 11 seasons as the head football coach at Cottage Grove High School, Gary Roberts is stepping down from this position.
Roberts announced the news to next year’s team at a lunchtime meeting on Tuesday.
“I’m here today to let you guys know that I’m stepping down as the head coach as of right now,” Roberts said. “So, I just wanted to tell you guys that 11 years, it’s been fun but I’m tired. I’m just being honest with you.”
Roberts finished with a 75-42 record at CGHS and has become the winningest football coach in school history. He was named Sky-Em Coach of the year five times (2010, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017) and 4A Coach of the year twice (2016, 2017) while also winning the school’s first ever football title (2017).
Roberts plans to continue in his role as vice principal and athletic director and told the team, regarding a new coach, that the “goal is to hopefully have a candidate that is internal.”
