In the coming weeks, the school district will receive the final cost estimate of how much the pool upgrades will cost at Cottage Grove’s Warren H. Daughtery Aquatic Center. The district will receive the schematic designs and will then get to the construction documents all with the goal of beginning construction in September.
The pool is going through renovations with updates to be to the pool, the locker rooms and with future renovations in mind. The budget for the process is $5.1 million which comes from a bond.
Harrison Moving Along
With 90-100 subcontractors on site each day, the new Harrison Elementary School is beginning to take shape. At Monday’s school board meeting, Matt Allen, who is in charge of SLSD’s maintenance, noted that last week it appeared that the school was three weeks behind schedule and now it is just one week behind. What has aided the progress is the nice weather that the area has had.

Dorena picking up STEAM
Dorena School’s principal Linda Folkman how the school is using STEAM to guide some of their work. STEAM is a program that uses science, technology, engineering, art and math to guide what students are learning. In this program, teachers are taking on two lessons from different areas of STEAM and designing two one-hour units around them. These lessons are then taught to a mixed group of 20 students (K-3 and 4-8). Each month the students will rotate around the different lessons on what the school is calling STEAM Fridays.
The meeting marked the first with Kyle Tucker as acting superintendent, replacing Krista Parent.
