Swimmers qualify for state meet

Three individuals from the Cottage Grove swim team are headed to Beaverton for the state meet

At the Special District 4 Swim Championships last weekend, Cottage Grove qualified three swimmers for the state swim meet.

For the boys, senior Ian Dukes claimed a spot in the 100-yard breast stroke after finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:09.62. Dukes also qualified in the 500-yard freestyle with a third place finish in a time of 5:39.58. Joining him at state in the 500-yard freestyle will be freshman teammate James Kelly who finished in a time of 5:46.78.

The boys’ team finished in sixth place with 77 points. Marshfield took first with 324 points.

For the Cottage Grove girls, sophomore MJ Raade was the lone qualifier. Raade will be racing in the 500-yard freestyle after securing third place at districts in a time of 5:49.31.

The state meet begins on Friday (Feb. 15) at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton. Raade will race in the 500 at 10:10 a.m. while Dukes and Kelly will race in the same race at 10:24 a.m. Dukes will race in the 100 breaststroke at 11:03 a.m.

Tickets for the competition are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
