120-year-old Cottage Grove personality to receive a mural unveiling at Art Walk

Sept. 8, 2022 — 120-year-old Cottage Grove personality to receive a mural unveiling at Art Walk Sept. 8, 2022 — The City of Cottage Grove’s Public Works and Development recently issued a notice of sign application in the Historic District, at 702 E. Main Street, The Bookmine, a book, plant and gift shop owned by sisters Roberta and Gail Hoelzle, since 1976. They requested permission to place a 32 sq. ft mural of Lena Flaiskey Becker on the west side of the building with a 15” x 18” metal plaque explaining the history of her life. Who was this woman? Lena Flaiskey Becker was a midwestern transplant from Fisher, Minn., who came to Cottage Grove with her husband, printer and transient Edwin Becker, in 1902. Early newspaper searches using the University of Oregon’s online archive of digitized materials, and binders full of documents at the Cottage Grove Historical Society researched by Debra Monsive show a rich and traceable history between the couple during their time in Cottage Grove.
