Week in review: Track and field teams find success at Prefontaine Invitational

Track and Field

The track and field teams of Cottage Grove, Elkton and Yoncalla/North Douglas all made their way to Coos Bay on Saturday for the Prefontaine Rotary Invitational.

For the Lions, it was junior Mitchell Krokus scoring a victory in triple jump with a personal record of 42-10 feet. With the jump, Krokus is tied for the farthest jump in all of 4A; the next closest jump is two feet back. On Saturday Krokus had another PR with his jump of 21-04.5 in long jump where he placed second. This mark puts him fourth in state at the 4A level.

The Cottage Grove boys also picked up points on the track with three top-eight finishers in the 3000. Junior Jimmy Talley took second with his time of 9:28 while sophomore Drew Chapman (9:48.61) and senior Paesen Timm (9:49.09) finished sixth and seventh respectively and were part of a pack of six runners that finished between 9:48 and 9:50.

For the Cottage Grove girls, sophomore Matty Ladd finished first in high jump with her season best jump of 5-01. Freshman Gracie Arnold finished third in the competition at 4-8 while also taking sixth in javelin.

Also scoring for Cottage Grove at the meet was sophomore Adelle Kent with a sixth place finish in pole vault and senior Erick Giffen in eighth in high jump.

For Elkton, sophomore Margaret Byle finished third in the 400, sixth in 200 and eighth in the 100. Teammate junior Sadie Olson took sixth in discus. Yoncalla/North Douglas junior Rilie-Jo Olds took fourth in the shot put.
