Offensive woes continue to be a thing of the past for the Lions softball team who have been on a roll lately and white hot in the batter’s box. Cottage Grove extended their winning streak to six games after sweeping Springfield in a doubleheader 16-0 and 21-0 continuing their recent wins in dominant fashion.

The Lions track team returned to competition following some time off during spring break. Cottage Grove took around 30 athletes to the Martist invite over the weekend that included a field of eight total teams. The boys side finished third with 102 points and the girls finished fifth with 52.

In the first two games for the Cottage Grove softball team, their offense struggled to establish any sort of rhythm, resulting in two opening-week losses. But in a doubleheader matchup last Thursday against Douglas, the Lions’ bats were scorching hot, scoring double digit runs in both games and picking up their first wins of the season.

Over the past week, the Cottage Grove baseball team faced their toughest competition yet at the Newport Spring Break tournament, featuring two top teams in pre-season top 10 and the other being ranked just outside. The Lions faced off against Gladstone, Henley and Newport and weren’t able to create much offensively. In the three games combined, Cottage Grove mustered seven runs while their opponents eclipsed double digit runs in each contest.

The Lions softball season got underway in not the most ideal conditions and against some stiff competition in Harrisburg who was ranked in the pre-season top 10 for 3A. Cottage Grove struggled early in the first game giving up nine runs in the first inning to Harrisburg. But despite the early deficit, the Lions still battled the rest of the way and were able to put up five runs.

Last Thursday, March 17 both the Cottage Grove and Creswell track and field programs kicked off their season in two introductory meets. The Lions competed at the Siuslaw Ice-breaker in Florence, and the Bulldogs competed in the Tri-County Ice-breaker in Junction City.

Last week the Cottage Grove baseball team got their season underway with a matchup against the North Bend Bulldogs. While the Lions didn’t get the result they were hoping for, they still managed to get plenty of runs on the scoreboard totaling six on the day but ultimately lost 10-6 to North Bend. Later in the week, the Lions bounced back to get a tough 2-1 victory on the road against Sisters.

Coming into the season Head Softball Coach Scott Worsham knew he would be able to lean on his pitching but thought his offense might take a little time to get going. In the first game of the season for Creswell, the bats were hot early, scoring 10 runs in the first inning, totaling 16 runs on the day against Oakland. Also seeing home runs by Lizabelle Osborn and Lauren Bailey who combined to bring in seven runs against the Oakers.

The Creswell baseball program featured a very young team a season ago, having no seniors on the roster and only four juniors giving a lot of underclassmen the time to log some quality playing time. This season under new head skipper Craig Leonard, the Bulldogs return looking to continue to grow from last year.

Gaining experience was the key for a lot of teams last year in the abbreviated season and the Creswell softball program took that on. The Bulldogs featured three seniors on their roster last year, but now will have six and an opportunity to build on what they started from last year.

Despite an abbreviated season a year ago, the Lions’ track and field program still enjoyed a successful season, sending a total of 14 athletes (including a relay team) to the state meet. This season, with more of a return to normal, the ultimate pursuit is a return to the state meet, which will be returning back to Hayward Field.

The new season will mark a new era for Lions baseball, as they welcome new skipper Lance Faxon. Faxon was a longtime assistant at Philomath High School being part of a number of successful Warrior teams and will look to bring some of that success to Cottage Grove.

The Creswell girls basketball team mounted a late rally in their quarterfinal matchup against Oregon Episcopal on Friday, March 3, but the Bulldogs were never able to get the game-changing bucket to shift the momentum there way and the Aardvarks were able to hold on for the 39-33 win over Creswell.

Despite facing an uphill battle with three starters fouling out in the second half and overtime against Douglas, the Bulldogs never counted themselves out and were able to find a way to win in a riveting contest to punch their ticket to the final state site in Coos Bay beating Douglas 50-46 in overtime.

Following their final league win against Siuslaw, the Cottage Grove boys basketball team returned to the postseason for the first time in five years and squared off against the Molalla Indians in the play-in round. Despite the Lions controlling the game most of the way. Molalla’s flurry of three-pointers in the final quarter got them back in the contest and eventually helped them pull away in the final minutes to get the 55-48 win over Cottage Grove.

Starting next fall, the local team’s football leagues will look a little different than they typically have with some teams moving back up a classification or moving to a completely different league.

The first round went to Harrisburg 51-49, the second round went to Creswell 50-44, and in the third meeting with much more on the line ahead of the state playoffs both team’s defensive intensity would ratchet up another level.

This go-round wouldn’t see as much drama as the home Tigers took control in the first half and never relinquished their lead and finished out the game with a 41-26 win over Cottage Grove.

On the other side of the court the Lady Warriors basketball team had been dismantling their opponents and at one point winning 16 games in a row.

The North Douglas Warriors however have only lost two games in 2022 one of which was to Riddle on Jan. 21. In a hard-fought contest on both sides, the Warriors would rally after being down at halftime to top the Bulldogs 50-49.

On Feb. 11 the Cottage Grove basketball team traveled to the Tigers’ jungle to square off against the Junction City the top-ranked team in 4A. Despite some of the Lions’ best stretches of play throughout the season, Junction City’s three-point barrage in the second half led them to a 57-42 win over Cottage Grove.

Following another gut wrenching loss against Pleasant Hill on Friday, Feb. 4. The Creswell boys basketball team didn’t have any time to wallow as they traveled to Medford to face the second ranked team in the 3A the Cascade Christian Challengers. Despite Creswell scoring the first points of the game, Cascade Christian was able to control the contest most of the way, earning the 57-30 over Creswell.

Forty teams came from all over the state came to participate at the Regional as five Creswell girls and two Cottage Grove girls battled in their respective divisions.

The Cottage Grove boys basketball team nearly orchestrated a huge upset against third ranked Marshfield Pirates at the Pirate Palace on Friday, Feb. 4. The Lions played one of their best halves of basketball, taking a six-point lead on the Pirates at halftime, but Marshfield eventually was able to rally and came away with a 68-64 win.

The Cottage Grove girls basketball team had to deal with some scheduling changes after their scheduled game against Marist Catholic was moved after the Spartans were dealing with COVID-19 issues. Unfortunately for Siuslaw, that extra rest and preparation time helped the Lions pummel the Vikings to the tune of a season-high 58 points and earned a big win 58-21 over Siuslaw.

Both North Douglas basketball teams picked up wins against conference rival Days Creek on Saturday, Jan. 29. The Lady Warriors won in dominant fashion with a 61-20 win as they continue to steamroll their opponents. The Warrior boys won in a bit of a closer contest with the final being 67-60, a far cry from their earlier bout with Days Creek when they won 70-32.

The Cottage Grove boys basketball team was able to regroup after back-to-back league losses against Junction City and Marist to take down Siuslaw 54-37 on Jan. 29. The game was moved to Saturday instead of the originally scheduled Friday due to the Vikings returning from a COVID-19 pause. Despite the change, the Lions were still hungry to get back on the winning side and controlled the contest from start to finish, never trailing at any point in the game.

The start of the new year wasn’t the kindest to the Creswell girls basketball team. The Bulldogs were able to play well in spurts or in half’s but not able to come away with a win in their first three games of 2022. Then the girls were forced to go on a COVID-19 weeklong pause after a positive test arose in the program. So, in Creswell’s first game action back, they showed no signs of rust and left no doubt after they crushed rival Pleasant Hill 57-41.

Creswell outscored the Boomers in every quarter of the game and are now averaging over 71 points per game during their win streak and holding their opponents to just under 40 points.
