With the Cottage Grove Lions volleyball team building a 3-3 record heading into Sky-Em League play, the team had lots of reasons to be optimistic. A year ago, the team started their season with an 0-6 record and was 2-18 in sets over that stretch. This year, through the first six games, Cottage Grove is 11-9 in sets going into league play.

Dye was hired not only as the Aqua Lions new water polo coach but will also serve as the swim coach and manager of the Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center. Dye, who is a Cottage Grove High School Alumni, was announced as the Lions new coach in June. He comes in after long-term coach Tyson Pilling and the school parted ways.

The Cottage Grove Lions boys soccer team kicked off the Jaime Urenda coaching era earlier this month. Urenda was celebrating his 36th birthday on Thursday, Sept. 14, when the Lions took on the Stayton team, which was one of the best in the 4A a year ago. It would be a big early test for Cottage Grove, who had just come off a 3-0 win over Philomath a few days earlier.

The Lions boys made history by having two individual runners place in the top 10, while also finishing in the top 10 in the first back-to-back seasons at state since 1968-69 with their eighth-place finish. Their female teammates also came into the weekend ranked outside the top 10 but put together a strong finish to finish seventh overall —which is the second-best finish in school history.

Prior to their meeting with Sutherlin, the Creswell girls basketball team was riding a small win streak of three in a row and scoring over 50 points per game in each win. The Bulldogs traded punches with Sutherlin in the first half of their contest, but the visitors proved why they are a top contender for a state championship as they ultimately defeated Creswell 58-41.
