Mental toughness a key component to success for Lions volleyball

With the Cottage Grove Lions volleyball team building a 3-3 record heading into Sky-Em League play, the team had lots of reasons to be optimistic. A year ago, the team started their season with an 0-6 record and was 2-18 in sets over that stretch. This year, through the first six games, Cottage Grove is 11-9 in sets going into league play.

Lions XC Teams off to hot start led by Bengtson

Led by junior Carter Bengtson, the boys team appears to have a great shot at contending again this season. Bengtson, who finished in first place at the Country Fair Classic with a time of 15.42.6, ran the fastest race of any Cottage Grove runner in the last twenty years, according to the team

A year after going 2-11 overall and scoring just eight goals in the team’s last 13 games, the Cottage Grove Lions girls soccer hoped for stronger results going into 2023. However, Cottage Grove has had many of the same struggles early on this season as they did a year ago.

Aqua Lions new coach a familiar name

Dye was hired not only as the Aqua Lions new water polo coach but will also serve as the swim coach and manager of the Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center. Dye, who is a Cottage Grove High School Alumni, was announced as the Lions new coach in June. He comes in after long-term coach Tyson Pilling and the school parted ways.

Lions boys soccer opens season 2-2

The Cottage Grove Lions boys soccer team kicked off the Jaime Urenda coaching era earlier this month. Urenda was celebrating his 36th birthday on Thursday, Sept. 14, when the Lions took on the Stayton team, which was one of the best in the 4A a year ago. It would be a big early test for Cottage Grove, who had just come off a 3-0 win over Philomath a few days earlier.

After a long, difficult 13-game losing streak, the Cottage Grove girls basketball team got a taste of victory last week against the North Bend Bulldogs, winning 45-38. It was the Lady Lions’ first league win of the season.

Lions boys finish 8th, girls take 7th at XC state championships

The Lions boys made history by having two individual runners place in the top 10, while also finishing in the top 10 in the first back-to-back seasons at state since 1968-69 with their eighth-place finish. Their female teammates also came into the weekend ranked outside the top 10 but put together a strong finish to finish seventh overall —which is the second-best finish in school history.

Anna Baltrusch keeps Bulldogs Volleyball rolling

Baltrusch was named to the position in 1996 and has only taken one year away from the program, and that was when she coached the eighth-grade team. Like many other times in that span, yet again she led the team to the playoffs this year.

Last Wednesday, Oct. 26, the North Douglas Warriors volleyball team began their hunt for a second 1A state championship when they hosted the Lost River Raiders, who made the 3 ½ hour road trip for the first round of the playoffs.

"Fight like Heather” Lions volleyball program continues to battle at end of difficult season

The Cottage Grove Lions volleyball team found a successful day at the Seaside Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8. The Lions had earned just two wins in their season, but won three of their four games, while using a new rotation at Seaside. The team then hosted the North Bend Bulldogs on Monday, Oct. 10, and hoped to use some momentum to propel them to another victory.

Sutherlin outlasts Bulldog girls

Prior to their meeting with Sutherlin, the Creswell girls basketball team was riding a small win streak of three in a row and scoring over 50 points per game in each win. The Bulldogs traded punches with Sutherlin in the first half of their contest, but the visitors proved why they are a top contender for a state championship as they ultimately defeated Creswell 58-41.
